Event Description
The start of the new season has seen mixed fortunes for the Gunners. An impressive win in the Community Shield against reigning champions Chelsea was coupled with an astute signing of Petr Cech, long overlooked at Stamford Bridge but still one of the best keepers in the game. This was quickly followed up by a poor home defeat against West Ham and a nervy win over a depleted Newcastle United.
Despite lacking a credible goalscoring threat, Wenger has stuck with the players who saw a successful FA Cup defence last year, but time will tell if not dipping into the market will prove a problem against talented European opposition. Free scoring forward Danny Welbeck has just been ruled out till after Christmas, and there are long term concerns about the fitness of Mezut Ozil and Theo Walcott.
Despite their domestic success, Dinamo Kiev continue to be a selling club, with a further ₤8 million gained in the summer sale of Jermaine Lens to Sunderland. Rebrov has strengthened his squad with four free signings, including the talented Serbian midfielder Radoslav Petrovic and a young Paraguayan forward from Basel. The base of the team, however, remains Ukrainian with plenty of focus on bringing youth players through to sell for a profit on the international market.
In terms of head to head, the two teams have only met 3 times in the Champions League, all in the group stages. Both teams benefitted from home advantage, with Dinamo coming out successful 2 out of the 3 games in Kiev and Arsenal doing the same in London. It will be interesting to see how the methodical passing philosophy of Wenger matches up this season against the fast paced wing play of Rebrov.
Arsenal
There's nothing like a European night at the Emirates, where the continent's finest come to test themselves against Arsenal, the Premier League's longest serving team in Europe. The tie against Dinamo Kiev promises to be another cracker as Arsene Wenger looks to improve on his Champion's League record. The start of the new season has seen mixed fortunes for the Gunners. Dynamo Kiev
On the other hand, Dinamo Kiev continue to dominate the Ukrainian league. After winning the whole thing outright last time round, they've started strongly again, winning 5 out of their first 6 matches and as always their charismatic ex-captain Sergei Rebrov will look towards more stern challenges in European competition.Despite their domestic success, Dinamo Kiev continue to be a selling club, with a further ₤8 million gained in the summer sale of Jermaine Lens to Sunderland.
