Event Description
Fans will be in for a treat if this year's Champions League Group B clash between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow lives up to their last meeting in 2009. United, trailing 3 - 1 with 6 minutes remaining, rescued a point with two dramatic late goals and advanced to the last 16. That season, both sides made it to the quarter finals, losing to the eventual finalists - winners Inter Milan dispatched CSKA Moscow while losing finalists Bayern Munich had too much for Manchester United.

Manchester United

This time round, both sides will be hoping to make a statement. United return after a one year absence from European football following their post-Fergie hangover. Manager Louis Van Gaal has had two years and seemingly unlimited funds to build a squad fit for challenging ther top titles. Keep an eye out for new signings such as Anthony Martial, the most expensive teenager in world football signed for a fee that may rise to ₤58 million, Morgan Schneiderlin, signed from Southampton to provide a midfield heartbeat, and Bastian Schweinsteiger, the German veteran with World Cup, Champions League and Bundesliga winners medals.

But the key to United's success will probably be the mercurial Wayne Rooney. If he can find his best form, United will have a strong chance of topping the group.

SCKA Moscow

manchester united vs cska moscow ticketsCSKA Moscow finished last in their Champions League group last year, although they did beat Manchester United's local rivals, Manchester City, in Manchester. CSKA also failed to recapture their Russian Premier League title, trailing Zenit St Petersburg by 7 points. After negotiating a tricky preliminary qualifying tie against Sporting CP, and 7 wins out of 7 so far in the Russian Premier League, CSKA fans will be expecting a stronger showing this year. And Manchester United, still looking vulnerable, would be a significant scalp.

Last season's top goal scorer, Seydou Doumbia, has returned on loan seeking to answer his critics after a disappointing spell with Roma. Other danger men for CSKA include Ahmed Musa, a pacy 22 year old forward already boasting 51 caps for Nigeria and over 100 appearances for CSKA, and Zoran Tosic, a Serbian left winger and set piece specialist who will want to excise the demons from his forgettable time with Manchester United in 2009.

There are no lame ducks in this finely balanced group, which also features Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven and German runners up Wolfsburg. Every point won and lost will be crucial, and like in 2009, the results between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow may be the difference progressing, and an embarrassing early exit.
