Year after year, Sunderland have put together an impressive end to their Premier league seasons that has ensured their safety and allowed them to stay in the league when their relegation has looked imminent on more than one previous occasion. They finished 16th last season, but looked doomed halfway through. They have been known to cause an upset however, in recent years, the most notable being when they beat a seemingly unstoppable Chelsea side away from home.
They will be relying on their star players, like Darren Fletcher and Lee Cattermole to help them throughout the season and they will need them to pull out big performances if they are to get a result when they play Manchester United. Sunderland will need to play defensively and hope that Adam Johnson provides pace and an attacking outlet going forward on the counter attack. The real battle when the two sides meet will take place in the middle of the park.
