Arsenal begins their quest for a fourth Premier League trophy on August 9, in a London derby against visiting neighbours West Ham United. With the signing of David Raya from Brentford, the Gunners can finally boast the presence of a world class goalkeeper. However, West Ham's manager, David Moyes, would be poised on proving himself by making a statement in this derby.
Arsenal
Ever since the exit of Jens Lehmann in 2008, the Gunners have found it difficult in the goalkeeping department. However, manager Mikel Arteta seems to have addressed this weakness with the signing of David Raya from their championship rivals - Brentford. Raya comes with a credential that speaks for itself - his passing ability is one of the best. His calmness and awareness is key. Before the arrival of David Raya, Aaron Ramsdale was The Gunners number one. But with the way that Arteta likes to play he decided to sign David Raya. Mikel Arteta likes playing out from the back and having a lot of possession. Something that David Raya is very good is playing out from the back.
Raya will benefit from a solid Gunners backline which comprises the duo of Gabriel and Saliba. Collectively, Arsenal's backline conceded 43 goals last season – 3rd fewest in the league. The Gunners also have a consistent new defensive midfielder - Declan Rice.
Arsenal's attacking unit is being led by Gabriel Jesus. Jesus had a splendid debut season - with 11 league goals last season and 7 assists, one of the goals being against West Ham.
In the last 8 games across all competitions West Ham have only managed to win one game, drawn two and have suffered defeat five times.
West Ham United
Ahead of their visit to Arsenal, manager David Moyes's Hammers kicked off their season by securing a spot in the UEFA Europa League by winning the UEFA Conference League, their first European trophy since 1965. They manage to get a result against a difficult Olympiacos team who beat them in the first game away from home.
West Ham would be starting their Premiership campaign without Declan Rice, who was transferred to rivals Arsenal for a staggering 100 Million. He was their top mid-fielder last season. To fill their shoes, David Moyes signed James Ward-Prowse form relegated team Southampton and Edson Alvarez from Ajax.
The Hammers have their work cut-out for them as they face an Arsenal squad that they have not beaten in eight years in the Premier League. They can capitalize on the element of surprise by leveraging on their manager's game plan. They can also take advantage of the fact that Arsenal are usually slow starters.
